Systematica Group got approval from antimonopoly bodies to buy 86% of the Sciener company, one of the key SAP integrators in the power industry of Russia. The transaction will allow Systematic to add its suggestions, which are numerous even without that, on the informatization of power companies.
As already informed, the Federal Antimonopoly Service satisfied the application of Systematica Group to purchase an 86% share in the authorised capital of Sciener. Representatives of the participants refused to comment the forthcoming transaction.
As of today, Sciener established in 2002 is the main contractor of 11 branches of the MRSK Centre power holding in the introduction of SAP solutions. Besides, among customers of Sciener there are Federal Grid Company of the Unified Energy System, North-West Interregional Distribution Grid Company, Moscow Integrated Power Company, and Regional Payment Processing Centre. The company’s subdivisions operate in Moscow, Belgorod, Krasnodar and Kursk.
The team of Sciener started to be formed during the late 90s at the IT department of Belgorodenergo Company, which became a pioneer in the SAP introduction in the Russian power industry. The information system built in Belgorod was further duplicated in other branches of MRSK Centre. Today, the SAP projects in the power industry bring to Sciener more than 90% of the proceeds (RUB 745 million in 2009).
Except SAP, Sciener has partner statuses at FujitsuSiemens and IDS Scheer (the latter was received after purchasing 100% of the assets of Fainomika Company in June 2008).
Boris Volpe, Vice-President of Sitronix (he had worked as Managing Director for SAP CIS to the middle of 2009) calls Sciener one of the most advanced companies in the Russian market of informatization of the power industry. Nevertheless, he considers this market is already rather saturated and it is difficult for companies working in a narrow niche (a core competence of Sciener is the introduction of the SAP IS-U billing module for power companies) to ensure financial soundness using their own resources.
According to Mr. Volpe, Systematic can offer customers of Sciener other SAP solutions and take upon itself the maintenance of existing installations, “and it is a rather profitable business.”
